Sharing stories helps children learn to navigate and define their place in the world, and reading aloud strengthens both individual learners and entire learning communities.

Farm to table in the classroom? Yes! During Community Hour today, the Mother Nature class enjoyed the fruits of their labors - fresh salad greens! Grown hydroponically, students harvested what they wanted to eat and added toppings. As they enjoyed their tiny salads, students discussed the many benefits of not only growing their own food, but also shopping locally at family farms.

Bakeshop Community Hour is focused on student lead learning. The students completed a two-day lesson in French Macarons taught by IB senior, Hannah Baer, who is hopeful to own and operate her own bakery in the future. When Hannah was asked about her experience leading the class for two days, she responded with: “I love the smile on others faces and their reaction when they taste the macarons. I feel good that I am making people happy and I enjoy helping people; especially guiding my peers through this difficult baking process.”
The Bakeshop students did very well and were quite successful for their first time making French Macarons! Students and staff throughout the high school were able to enjoy their delicious little cookies.

IBHS’s Creative Writing Community Hour spent the first few weeks cultivating our thoughts and creating two minute memoirs! Students were challenged to write about a significant moment or aspect of their life in only 300-500 words. The trick? Mixing in creative elements one would use while writing fiction, while maintaining the truth of the story. The idea was inspired by a 2014 Chipotle campaign titled “Cultivating Thoughts” in which inspiring individuals from Toni Morrison to everyday students could get their story published on the back of a Chipotle bag or cup. The purpose? To share our stories with one another, build community, and realize that even the smallest pairing of words can change the world. Stop by the library today to read the stories of some seriously talented high school students & don’t forget to grab a “hidden treasure” from the bag if the story resonates with you!
