The Mother Nature Community Hour class had their hands full on Monday - full of pickles, that is! Students spent part of their class period learning not just about the history and methods of canning food, but also about the benefits of growing and preserving their own food. On their own, students reasoned that growing and canning food is one way to help the larger community, as eliminating wide-scale production and transportation of food helps the environment. They also reasoned that growing and canning food is a great way to help their own families with food cost and quality. With a recipe for easy refrigerator pickles in hand, students went to the "lab" and canned their very own half-pint jar of dill pickles. Mother Nature students are well on their way to becoming the next generation of home canners!
